Introducing the iRobot Create™ Programmable Robot
Robot hobbyists, enthusiasts and educators: Are you tired of playing games with robot kits? Are you ready to dedicate your time and skills to making something that’s fun, powerful and your very own creation? Do it right with the innovative new programmable robot built by iRobot’s leading roboticists – the iRobot® Create™ Programmable Robot. The iRobot Create is a durable, reliable, fully assembled development robot based on the tried-and-true iRobot® Roomba® Vacuuming Robot platform featuring out-of-the-box programming capabilities.
iRobot Create features:
Open Interface allows you to send commands to the robot through a serial port.
10 built-in demos perform various, preprogrammed behaviors.
Works out-of-the-box. No need to build your own mobility platform.
Over 30 built-in sensors allow the robot to react to both internal and external events.
With expansion ports you can add your own creations, sensors, actuators, or arms.
Command Module (sold separately) runs your code on the robot via the open interface, making it truly autonomous.
iRobot Create Q&A
What is the iRobot® Create™ Programmable Robot?
iRobot Create is an innovative and affordable programmable robot designed for robot hobbyists, enthusiasts, advanced high-school and college students, aspiring roboticists and serious robot developers. iRobot Create comes pre-assembled, so developers can start designing new robots without having to build and assemble a mobile robot from scratch.
Advanced high school students and college students can experiment and learn about robotics or computer programming. Novices interested in robotics can use the Create robot to learn about programming a robot. Advanced roboticists will most likely add the iRobot Command Module or a more advanced computer to the Create robot to enable it to do more advanced activities.
What can you do with the iRobot Create?
The iRobot Create can be programmed using the iRobot Command module to perform various behaviors, move around, play sounds, light its lights, take input from its sensors or buttons, and react to its environment. By adding additional hardware, users can develop robot ideas and behaviors of their own. Some ideas that robot developers have used the Create for include a robot bellhop that follows you while carrying your belongings, a bionic hamster and a robot that brings you drinks from your refrigerator. Because the iRobot Create contains an electrical interface for adding additional hardware, the robots you can develop with iRobot Create are limited only by your imagination and ingenuity.
Is iRobot Create for Kids? Do you plan to make a version for Kids?
While there are lots of fun things you can do with iRobot Create, it is not a toy for young children. iRobot Create requires some computer programming ability. Without this ability, users are limited to playing the pre-programmed demos or sending Open Interface commands through the serial cable. Sophisticated robot programming requires the iRobot Command Module.
What is the iRobot Command Module?
Think of the iRobot Command Module as a mini-computer that can be used to control iRobot Create. The Command Module contains an 8-bit, 20 MHz microcontroller (Atmel ATMega168) enabling full programmability of iRobot Create’s motors, lights, sounds, and sensor readings. The Command Module plugs into the Create robot’s cargo bay connector and provides on-board control with programs you write in C or C++. It has four DB-9 expansion ports for adding your own hardware. The Command Module includes the Command Module CD (containing 3 example programs and the compiler), USB cable, and Quick Start Guide. Full documentation is available online.
What type of computer is required for Create and the Command Module?
Any PC running Windows XP can operate the iRobot Create or iRobot Command Module. Documentation is not yet available to program the iRobot Command Module for operating systems other than Windows XP. We hope to have documentation for Linux and Mac users sometime soon.
What knowledge is required for Create?
Knowledge of computer programming is required to control iRobot Create. Without computer skills, users are limited to using the pre-programmed demos and scripts. Knowledge of C or C++ is required to use the iRobot Command module.
